Iâll try to round up dinner as quickly as I can so I can scold him, then go home to Autumn. Will she even be there? She has her first night off from the bar tonight, and sheâs a young woman in her twenties. What if she decided to go out?
No, she wouldnât. I bet Iâll find her curled up in the library, nose in a silly book.
âWeâre here, sir.â I glance at the popular Downtown restaurant. I probably should have called in advance to make a reservation, but theyâll make an exception for me. They always do.
âWait for me. This wonât take long,â I instruct as I get out of the car. I watch Charlie expertly park her car down the road. When she gets out, Iâm taken aback to see her hair is now let down her back.
She gives me a dimpled grin as she approaches. I realize a little objectively that sheâs actually quite pretty. So, why arenât I interested? She took her hair down for dinner and her lips are now glistening, which means sheâs trying to look good for me. Or is that an arrogant assumption?
Normally, I wouldnât hesitate to flirt with her through dinner, if you can call unrelenting eye contact flirting. Itâs my only move, and it hasnât failed me yet. But for whatever reason, the effort sounds unappealing tonight. For her, anyway.
âThis place looks amazing! But it seems to be packed, will we be able to get a table?â
âWe better,â I mutter, suddenly in a foul mood as I march through the entrance of the restaurant. Damn it all.
âOkayyyyyy,â I hear Charlie say behind me. I wonder if sheâs rolling her eyes right now, but I donât care enough to turn back to check.
âMr. Beaufort!â Rosie, the hostess walks forward, fluttering her hands nervously. âWe werenât expecting you tonight.â
âMy companion and I need a table. Is my usual available?â
âActually, the other Mr. Beaufort is at that table tonight.â I know itâs not my father leaving the comforts of his private chef to venture into town tonight, which means Ezra blew off our meeting to take one of his side pieces out? Fucker, Iâm going to make him regret it.
âBut we can get you one! Give me a moment, please,â Rosie adds quickly and rushes inside. I glance back at Charlie whoâs gone stiff as a board.
âIs there a problem?â I raise a brow, not caring about the answer either way. Iâm already regretting agreeing to this dinner.
âShe said âthe other Mr. Beaufort.â That would be Ezraâ¦right?â
âAnd?â I query, not seeing what the problem is.
âYou know what? I donât think Iâm that hungry anymore. We should probably take a rain chââ But sheâs interrupted by the waitress returning.
âFollow me sir, madam.â
We trudge through the throng of diners, Rosie leading us toward the back of the restaurant. A tinkling laugh suddenly hits my ears, and a chill runs down my spine. My head snaps in the direction of the sound. I immediately spot Ezra, seated facing me, but heâs not what has my attention.
